Bug Fables Dev – Conversation and Coffee Interview

We recently had the good fortune to play and review Bug Fables by Moonsprout games. Our luck continued when we were able to interview lead developer Jose Fernando Gracia. Below is what he had to say.

1. Can you tell us about your game Bug Fables?

Bug Fables is a turn-based RPG where you control a group of explorers: Vi the bee, Kabbu the Beetle and Leif the Moth. They’re exploring Bugaria to find the Everlasting Sapling, a treasure that can grant immortality! Along the way, they’ll have to learn to work together and alongside others! The battles make use of action commands to strengthen attacks or defend. You can also use turn relay to switch your characters’ moves.

2. How long have you been working on it and how big is your team now?


The idea’s been on our minds for a while, but we’ve been actually developing Bug Fables for about 3 years now! The main team was just 4 people, but we had a lot of help from contractors when we needed to produce environment art or background props.

3. How did you get into the game industry?

It’s been a dream forever. If extremely bad Newgrounds flash games count, then I’d say a while!! But really, the first project I made that got any sort of traction was Robin (https://store.steampowered.com/app/671720/Robin/), which I developed alongside classmates as an assignment.


4. A lot of smaller devs struggle with marketing, What are your tips for marketing that you have utilised with Bug Fables?


I think when you’re at the very beginning, before even thinking of publishers or getting people to play your game, all you can do is show your work and its improvements constantly over time. There’s a lot of great hashtags like #screenshotsaturday that revolve around showing progress. And if you know sites where people discuss the genre you’re working in, talking to the community directly never hurts! If you have the luck of living in an area where developers hold meetups, I can’t stress enough that it’s worth going. You market, learn, and make friends all in one go!


5. What is the moment to moment gameplay like in Bug Fables?


In Bug Fables, you follow the main story by controlling Vi, Kabbu and Leif’s team while exploring and battling. While exploring, you can meet new characters, take on new quests, cook items to prepare for tough battles and solve puzzles on the field. When solving puzzles, enemies will surely pop up to attack. The game transitions to turn-based combat at that point. Because Vi, Kabbu, and Leif all have their own unique abilities, a big theme of the game is teamwork. Everything’s possible if you stick together as a team!

6. Is this your first game? Do you have plans for any future games at this time?


Although it’s not my first game, it’s definitely the first game that I charge money for! So that’s a bit intense… We’d love to keep making games! Though what we’ll make next isn’t decided yet. It’ll definitely have the same amount of love though.

7. What’s your favourite game of all time?


Super Mario RPG and SMT: Devil Survivor are tied for me. I think I’ve beat both like 14 times…
