What Do We Know So Far?
Who are behind Ancient Abyss?
Screambox Studio are the development team behind Ancient Abyss. While publishing is being handled by the team at Zodiac Interactive.
What kind of game will it be?
Ancient Abyss is set to be a mixture of 2D Zelda and Roguelikes. What this means is that you’ll be able to explore in an action-adventure setting. Find items to delve deeper into the maze. And you’ll also experience perma-death and procedurally generated levels.
Where will we find it?
Ancient Abyss will be receiving a wide release. The game will be available on console, PC and even Mac. All major consoles are planned, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
When can we get it?
Currently, there is no release date set. While most areas including the Steam page mention a 2019 release. However, as the end of 2019 is rapidly approaching it might be safer to expect a 2020 release.
More info required!
The game is set to be a 2D Zelda-like game. There are no shortage of games in this style. For instance, Ittle Dew, Swords of Ditto, Moonlighter, Swordbringer and even the recently covered Sparklite. Most of these games even have procedurally generated levels. So what does Ancient Abyss have to set it apart? Well, firstly the visuals, the images, and trailers released so far show that Ancient Abyss will have a unique and gorgeous art style. Particularly notable is the dynamic lighting effects.
Secondly, there is the combat. While all the Zelda-likes mentioned have fine combat, they mostly follow the Zelda format fairly closely. From the looks of the trailer, Ancient Abyss will incorporate some higher-level combat functions such as dodges and counters as well as a range of melee and ranged weapons.
While not much has been shared about the story of the game. We do know that it will take place in an ever-shifting maze and the goal is to explore the deepest parts of the maze. It has also been alluded to that the maze is hiding a mysterious dark force. While it is still not a lot of information it’s enough to hold my interest, along with the visuals and combat we’ve seen so far.

Coffee of choice: I like the sweeter kinds, mixed with chocolate, coconut, caramel etc. but I won’t turn down a flat white or a straight black either.
