Riposte!, have at thee – Still Brewing

Riposte! Gameplay

What do we know so far?

Who are behind Riposte?

Riposte! is being developed and published by Misdirection Games. Riposte! is their first entry to be listed on Steam. But it isn’t as haphazard as a lot of solo devs tend to be when starting out. Available on Misdirection Games website (link at the bottom), there is a blog post outlining how Riposte! came to be. In this post there are five potential games listed, one of which was an early version of Riposte!, however, the direction of the game did end up shifting in an interesting way.

What kind of game will it be?

Ostensibly it will be a fighting game. However, it holds an equal claim to being a party game and a physics-based game as well. The main concept of the game is a duel between medieval knights, however, rather than controlling the knights the players will control the weapons directly.

Where will we find it?

Being both a debut title and self-published. The developer is scaling back his ambition and seeking a PC/Steam release, to begin with. Depending on the success of the title and the difficulty in porting the gameplay to the consoles it may or may not see a later console release. However, the whole concept of the game would work incredibly well with the Nintendo Switch joy-cons. Both with their dual nature and motion controls.

When can we get it?

The game is scheduled for a Spring release. But not everywhere has Spring at the same time. Seeing as the company is based in Seattle in the US. I would have to assume it is the Nothern Hemisphere Spring so between late March and late June.

More info required!

As mentioned earlier Riposte! is a mixture of fighting, party and physics games. Where things get more interesting is the co-operative nature of the game. Matches are fought between 4 combatants split into teams of two. Each player will control a weapon or shield rather than the Knight wielding them. Teamwork will be key in playing effectively, such as having the shield user block the enemy strikes while the sword player tries to land a hit. However, as the other team will also be made of two players they will be able to use the same strategies. Based on the pictures available so far it looks like you’ll be able to select all weapons if you wish, making defense harder but still possible and increasing your attack options.

There also seems to be a mode planned where the disembodied hands and weapons will fly around with balloons. This looks like a mixture of STARWAHL and the battle mode in Mario Kart.

Riposte! will contain a few different game modes including various mini-games. You’ll have access to a range of weapons and shields to try out, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and special abilities. For instance, the mace is weak at stabbing but due to the weight of the head, it is stronger when swung and contains a special attack maximizing this strength.

Overall the game is looking quite bizarre and fun, it will also be controller-based only so you’ll need to make sure you have a few controllers around if you’re going to play. Likely the game will be available via remote-play as well.
