Shadow Gangs, beat’em up – Still Brewing

Shadow Gangs gameplay

What do we know so far?

Who are behind Shadow Gangs?

Shadow Gangs is both developed and published by JKM Corp. This game will be their first on Steam. From what I can tell it appears to be their first game in general. However, it’s likely that the team have worked on other games as parts of other companies. But I can’t confirm or refute it. After some searching, I did manage to find that the lead developer has worked in the industry for a few years. The sprite artist worked with Toei animation for a while, etc. So there we go, they aren’t 100% newcomers.

What kind of game will it be?

The game will be an old-school beat-em-up. With side-scrolling platforming aspects as well. From the looks of it the best comparison would be if Ninja Gaiden had Jimmy or Bimmy (I know it’s Billy but the translation team didn’t) starring.

Where will we find it?

Based on what I can see so far the game will be a PC exclusive. However, as the game pays homage to classic console games I would imagine future ports would be possible if demand is high enough.

When can we get it?

Shadow Gangs should be out very soon. The game is scheduled for release on April 11th so the wait is far from long. Assuming there are no last-minute pushbacks you’ll be punching gang members like it was the 80’s again soon.

Shadow Gangs gameplay

More info required!

Shadow Gangs is another decidedly retro game. However, unlike Ghosts’n DJ’s Shadow Gangs seems to be more of an homage to an era than a specific game. Sort of what Clive ‘N’ Wrench is doing with 3D platformers but with 2D sidescroller beat-em-ups. The art style of the game is traditional but looks more like an HD remaster than something directly pulled from the ’80s. This is nice because you get a level of crispness that is probably closer to how most people remember the old games than how they actually look.

You control Dan a ninja master. And in typical ’80s fashion, Dan’s family (instead of just his girl) has been stolen by evil ninjas. So Dan will venture through 10 levels and defeat 6 bosses in order to save them. Dan will have to use all his ’80’s brawler skills to achieve his goal. Jumping, wall jumping, punching, kicking, throwing shurikens, transforming into full ninja mode and of course magic too (because why not?). Shadow Gangs is unashamedly ’80s in its approach. In fact, it wears the inspiration on its tattered denim jacket sleeves.

The trailer also mentions 2 types of mini-games that will be available in between levels. And it shows a shooting gallery one where Dan shoots Ninjas like fish in a barrel.
