I, Dracula: Genesis – Still Brewing
What do we know so far?
Who are behind I, Dracula: Genesis?
The team that have both developed and at this stage will be self-publishing the game are Moregames. I, Dracula: Genesis will be their first Steam game. However, I’m sure we’ll see plenty more games from Moregames in the future. While this game may be their first major release it doesn’t mean they are entirely new to development. The small indie team (4 people all up) have been making small games for a long time already and have decided to really buckle down and produce something special with I, Dracula: Genesis.
What kind of game will it be?
In essence, the game is a twin-stick roguelike. But really it’s more of a twin-stick roguelike pushed to the nth degree. I’m talking tons of items, guns, artifacts, skills, characters, and more. The game will have procedurally generated maps for variety. And the random number generator will make sure all sorts of events and equipment will turn up so you never know exactly what to expect. However, the team have also opted for an interesting feature where you can break weapons down for parts to mix and match. Something I wish Borderlands would try, maybe Borderlands 4 will add it? Who knows? All I know is that I, Dracula: Genesis will have it and it sounds awesome.
Where will we find it?
The game will be heading into Steam early access soon (more on that in a bit). But the team have confirmed that the eventual full release will include consoles. With both the PS5 and Xbox Series X supposedly seeing release in 2020 it is possible the game will make it to them. However, as was the case with the previous generation launches the current consoles will likely still be supported so I would expect a PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch release at some point.
When can we get it?
The current release schedule is actually fairly close. With the game planned to launch on May 22nd. However, this date is for early access on Steam only. While I mentioned before that they were attempting a console release for the eventual release (which is true). But the full release is at the moment estimated for a 2021 release. That date may change though as the developers are actively working with their community so it might actually push back the development as they add more to the game. Or alternatively, if the implementation of the base game goes incredibly well they might streamline the release and then add new content as patches or DLC.
More info required!
One thing you may have noticed so far is that I have used the term twin-stick a few times, but not shooter. The reason for this is that while the game uses twin-stick mechanics it seems certain weapons or potentially character classes will use melee weapons. Currently, the game has 5 character classes (including one that has a hand for a head) but the developers are extending the roster to 10 and may even add a few more before the full release. They also have over 160 enemies and 20 bosses and plans to add more. But the really exciting number is the items with over 1200 items: relics, weapons, skills, perks, relics, alien artefacts, consumables, actives, and passives.
The developers are also a fan of old-school difficulty. So the game is likely to be anything but a walk in the park. But with the random elements, you’ll still likely see a lot of new content even if you can’t progress that far. At this stage, I’m not sure if they will implement a failure progression system so even when you fail you’re working toward something like Kelipot. But it would fit well and I would personally really like to see it. Either way though, it looks like the game is shaping up quite nicely. The developers have been hard at work on the game for over 5 years now and they seem to be serious about making the best game they possibly can.
