Craftopia, have it all – Still Brewing

What do we know so far?

Who are behind Craftopia?

The team behind Craftopia are POCKET PAIR Inc. The game will be their second title on Steam after Overdungeon a positively received game from August 2019. However, unlike Overdungeon Craftopia is being self-published by POCKET PAIR Inc. as well as developed. POCKET PAIR Inc. are a small team (7 members), however, their CEO has been in the industry for a while now working for major teams including Nintendo themselves.

What kind of game will it be?

It might actually be easier to talk about what kind of game it won’t be. The developers can’t be accused of being unambitious with this title. Craftopia is, in essence, a crafting game probably more like 7 Days to Die or Volcanoids than Minecraft. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From the trailer alone it looks like if you combined Monster Hunter with Harvest Moon, threw in some Dynasty Warriors, added a pinch of Pokemon, three tablespoons of Breath of the Wild, and then baked the whole thing inside and anime packaging, adding some The Crew and Steep when completed. Essentially, the trailer shows so many different things it’s hard to say what the game will be. Other than an ambitious masterpiece if they can pull it off.

Where will we find it?

Information is a little hard to find, especially as the team are based in Japan. However, the game is confirmed for PC/Steam release. I couldn’t find any mention of console release plans. But at the same time, I couldn’t find anything to say they wouldn’t happen. As it stands it will probably come down to success and demand after the PC release.

When can we get it?

Based on their Steam page (links will be at the bottom of the page), the wait won’t be long now. The game is scheduled for a June 4th release. However, it will be an Early Access title. It will be interesting to see how much of the confirmed content will make it into the EA release as the trailer shows quite a lot of varied gameplay. Only time will tell if they are going to roll out everything and then try to tighten up the mechanics or if they will limit the content until the mechanics have been finetuned like Tidal Shock.

More info required!

As mentioned above, the game is a very ambitious project. Even just the trailer shows a scope that would impress most AAA studios. POCKET PAIR Inc. have proven with their first game Overdungeon that they are capable of mixing genres and making quality games that are well received. However, Overdungeon mixes real-time card battling with tower defense and rogue-likes. Which are far simpler to implement than a full 3D adventure combining enough elements to make your head spin. But I guess that’s why I was so drawn to the project in the first place. POCKET PAIR Inc. have shown they aren’t ready to just rest on their laurels.

Just based on the images and trailer available currently the game looks like it will be amazing. The art is crisp and bright, the character models fall between realism and cartoon in a very Nintendo way. The combat mechanics shown in the trailer look quite fun with both a Dauntless/Monster Hunter styled fights against a giant beast and a more Dynasty Warriors hacking through swathes of skeletons. Then there is the farm you can tend which brings up the Harvest Moon comparison. The trailer also shows a dune buggy, some sort of hoverboard, an airplane, and even a rocket launching.

And if all of this doesn’t sound exciting enough the trailer also shows that the game will be multiplayer. Plus you can build things to auto-harvest items for you meaning you can focus on the most fun aspects of the game.
