Drake Hollow, protect the plants – Still Brewing
What do we know so far?
Who are behind Drake Hollow?
The game is being developed by The Molasses Flood. The same team is also publishing the game. Drake Hollow will be the second game Molasses Flood have on Steam. After the well-received The Flame In The Flood from 2016.
What kind of game will it be?
Drake Hollow is set to be a hybrid game, part action-adventure, part base-building tower defense, and part survival. Essentially it seems it will follow a similar structure to games like Minecraft, Volcanoids, and Seven Days To Die. Where your time will be split between scavenging resources, building/maintaining your base, and combat during the night.
Where will we find it?
As mentioned above the game will be launching on PC (Steam). But it is also planned for a limited console release. At this stage, it appears to be an Xbox One exclusive. I couldn’t find confirmation but the game will likely have cross-play seeing as it is an online multiplayer game between Xbox and Windows PC.
When can we get it?
The wait shouldn’t be much longer, as the current schedule lists the release as July 16/17 (depending on which country you live in). The team have confirmed the game is close to completion. They have announced an open-beta test for stress testing. The open beta will run from June 19 until Monday June 22 at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern / 5pm UK (that’s 2am on June 23 AEST). You can access the beta by signing up to the Xbox Insider Program on Xbox One.
More info required!
First off, one of the most notable aspects of the game is the art-style. The team have put together a rather lovely looking game. The art-style is a midpoint between realism and cartoon, sort of like Quantum League or Darwin Project. However, the actual character design, especially the designs of Drakes and Ferals have a ton of personality that sets it apart. Drakes are little vegetable folk that you need to not only protect but also entertain. And the Ferals are their mortal enemies who seek to devour the little Drakes. Which is interesting because it would technically make them vegetarians?
The full game will have a number of biomes to play around in each with over a square mile of procedurally generated land to explore. However, you’ll need to weigh up when to explore and when to build your base. It does appear that you’ll be able to combat the Ferals without the aid of the buildings. But even if you don’t focus on the defenses you’ll still need to make sure the Drakes have food, water, and entertainment. The game will have online multiplayer which is one of the most exciting aspects as you’ll be able to create roles for each player to really explore the beautiful world on offer.

Coffee of choice: I like the sweeter kinds, mixed with chocolate, coconut, caramel etc. but I won’t turn down a flat white or a straight black either.
